Presentation by National Emergency Management

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) gave a presentation on 7 March 2012 from 11.00 AM to 12.30 PM in AIMU. The audience consisted of Associate Degree Nursing students Levels 111, V, VI and members of staff including Mrs Grissel Leon, Associate Dean of Nursing. The roles and functions of NEMO were discussed and also the various Acts and powers of the organization. The Education Act No. 41 of 1999 requires that all schools need a Disaster Committee Team, a disaster plan. Employees/Occupational Health and Safety Act No 10 of 1995 stipulate that Employees should be trained in Fire Safety, at least First Aid and Disaster Management. Audience was given some instructions on Disaster Management and Prevention on hurricanes, storms, sensing a tsunami, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. Some slides were shown on past and recent disasters in St Lucia, other Caribbean Islands and the world. It was a worthwhile and very informative presentation to the students as well as the staff.
