Helping MD4 students obtain a perspective on the differently abled

Medical students as future doctors should be able to empathize with the ‘differently abled’ and be knowledgeable about the health needs of this population. AIMU is committed to helping students understand the patient perspective. A Health humanities module is conducted for all MD2 students. A screening of the well-known 1989 movie ‘My left foot’ was held on Thursday, 21st June from 1 pm onwards in the MD4 classroom. Fourth semester students participated. The screening was followed by group activities. Among the objectives of the session were to introduce students to the perspective of differently abled persons, demonstrate knowledge of how being differently abled impacts the individual, family and society and introduce them to a different culture and their perspectives about the world. The group work was followed by group presentations and the facilitators provided their inputs when needed. Student feedback was on the whole positive though finding time for this activity in a crowded curriculum remains a challenge.
