Accreditation Status Update

Accreditation Status Update

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is the formal approval for a stated period of time of an institution and/or its program by a recognized body after submission of a self-study and external evaluation and is based on predetermined standards.

What is the main accreditation body for Caribbean medical schools who sets standards?

The main accreditation body for the Caribbean medical schools is the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professionals (CAAM-HP). CAAM-HP is one of the few accreditation bodies that has been recognized by ECFMG with the help of WFME and FAIMER.

Why accreditation is important for students?

ECFMG informed in 2015 that for students to be eligible for USMLE and licensure practice in the US the student has to graduate from a school that is accredited by a recognized accreditation body. This regulation will come into effect from 2023. CAAMHP was recognized as a credible accreditation body in 2012.

What are the purposes of accreditation?

  1. Assure the quality of the institutional program
  2. Assist in the improvement of the institutional program
  3. To be a stimulus for self-review
  4. To stimulate appropriate innovation

The overarching purpose is to ensure the quality of graduates and their fitness to practice, thus ensuring quality patient care and patient safety.

Schools have till 2023 to get accredited and we are confident that with more than 89% of positive points (compliant and partially compliant) AIMU will achieve accreditation well before the deadline.

What is AIMU’s Current Status with CAAM-HP?

In the appeal process to appeal the current decision

Expected Timeline: 2-3 months
