World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS)) in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen. The World Directory is a joint venture of the World Federation for Medical Education(WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). The World Directory has been created by merging FAIMER’s International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and WFME’s Avicenna Directory.

The World Directory defines a “medical school” as an educational institution that provides a complete or full program of instruction leading to a basic medical qualification; that is, a qualification that permits the holder to obtain a license to practice as a medical doctor or physician.

The data included at the initial publication of the World Directory were the combined data of IMED and Avicenna, as of the end of 2013. The World Directory team endeavors to keep the data current, by including new schools, bringing existing entries up to date, and correcting any errors or omissions that are identified. Data are collected by the World Directory through the WFME office in Ferney-Voltaire and the FAIMER office in Philadelphia.

Medical schools listed in the WDOMS have been recognized by their local governments as institutions authorized to confer a medical degree upon their graduates. Government recognition of medical schools is generally granted by a local Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, or medical board. This recognition does not imply accreditation.
